Why collaboration holds the key to a sustainable future

The food and drink industry stands at a pivotal moment. As climate change accelerates and public health challenges mount, our supply chains face growing pressures from extreme weather, while health issues linked to poor diets strain society. The urgency for change has never been greater.

Many businesses are stepping up, but the pace of progress is often frustratingly slow. Small victories are common, yet the transformational leaps needed to secure our future remain elusive. The truth is, no single company can tackle these complex challenges alone. It’s clear that our path forward depends on collaboration. Read more about the collaborations we have been following in The Grocer.

Learning from the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic proved how quickly industries can innovate and adapt when united by a shared sense of purpose. That same spirit of collaboration is essential to address the climate and health crises. Partnerships must go beyond transactional relationships and focus on scalable, meaningful solutions that drive lasting change.

This ethos inspired Future Food Movement’s latest initiative: a Supper Club series designed to bring together senior leaders - often competitors - to share strategies, explore practical solutions, and keep climate action firmly on the agenda.

Driving Change at the Top

Real transformation starts in the boardroom, but too often, climate priorities are sidelined in favour of short-term gains. To address this, we launched our Supper Club series in collaboration with Foodsteps. The series creates a unique space for leaders to engage in candid conversations about tackling the food system’s most pressing challenges.

Our first event, “How to Influence and Engage the C-Suite to Drive Food System Transformation,” featured two trailblazing leaders from Sainsbury’s: Mark Given, Chief Marketing Officer, and Ruth Cranston, Director of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability. They shared how they keep sustainability at the forefront of decision-making in one of the UK’s largest retailers.

Collaborating for a Net Zero Future

The Supper Club series is a first-of-its-kind partnership between two female founders: Anya Doherty of Foodsteps and Kate Cawley of Future Food Movement. Both are dedicated to bridging the climate skills gap and accelerating the food industry’s transition to Net Zero. Together, they are equipping leaders with cutting-edge tools and insights to act boldly and decisively.
